A deal is unlikely to materialize for Real Madrid’s Fabio Coentrao despite reports from Spain.

Ex-players of Liverpool and fans alike have been crying out for the club to sign a new left-back for several months after it became clear that Alberto Moreno is not a long-term solution to the left-sided fullback position.

His cup final performances against Manchester City and Sevilla last season in the Capital One Cup and the Europa League respectively have resulted in a widespread call for a new left-back to be signed. However, as a Liverpool supporters I feel it is unlikely we’ll ever get our wish.

Raphael Guerreiro was a target and then he was signed by Borussia Dortmund so attention turned to Leicester City’s Ben Chilwell who then signed a new contract with the champions. Reports then indicated that the club was interested in Jonas Hector after the German impressed with his country at the Euros. He too has extended his contract with Koln.

The apparent lack of quality left-backs on the market is a thorn in Liverpool’s side but Spanish newspaper, Sport [via the Daily Star] are reporting that Fabio Coentrao could head to England to try and reignite his stuttering career.

However, there is a big problem: the Portuguese international is currently sidelined with a serious hamstring injury which could see him out until October. This would hardly be ideal as Moreno would still be the only fit left-back.
