Jöel Matip reveals why he is relieved to be on Klopp’s team rather than against him.
Matip joined Liverpool this summer on a free transfer from Bundesliga side Schalke. During his time in Germany he found himself pitted against Klopp’s Borussia Dortmund and he didn’t enjoy it as you might expect.
Dortmund and Shalke are huge rivals, much in the same way Liverpool and Everton are, and the Rühr derby clashes that took place hold strong fixture in Matip’s memory.
In an exclusive interview with the official Liverpool FC Magazine, Matip has revealed why he prefers to be on Klopp’s team:
“Jürgen Klopp is a great coach. He was the coach of Dortmund when I was at Schalke but now I have the possibility to play for him at Liverpool,” Matip said, who turned 25 yesterday.
“It was a very easy decision to play for him at Liverpool. It was a very easy decision to play for him too because he can make every player better.

“Schalke versus Dortmund is the biggest derby in German football. They were hard games because his team was so good and we had some very close results.
“Those results were not always good for us, though!”
I’m not sure if Matip is aware but just about every Liverpool supporter is glad that he’s on Klopp’s team too. The Cameroonian will be a very important player for the Reds this season with his composure on the ball extremely valuable in the centre of defence.
