Daniel Sturridge has picked up a hip injury which, while being minor, will see him miss the friendlies against Barcelona and Mainz.

It seems almost cruel that Sturridge gets injured a week before the start of the new Premier League season. Many people will be angry, and understandably so but very few will be sympathetic with a player who has missed much of the last two years at Anfield.

According to the Express, the injury is not serious but Sturridge will likely miss the season opener against Arsenal next Sunday.

In Sturridge’s absence, Liverpool will lineup against Barcelona with a front three of Sadio Mane, Philippe Coutinho and Roberto Firmino.

Liverpool XI: Mignolet; Clyne, Lovren, Klavan, Milner; Lallana, Can, Wijnaldum; Coutinho, Firmino, Mane.

Barcelona XI: Ter Stegen, Sergio, Denis, Arda, Suárez, Messi, Cámara, Mascherano, Munir, Aleix Vidal, Mathieu
