Liverpool are rather short at the back due to injuries to Mamadou Sakho, Joel Matip and Joe Gomez and Jürgen Klopp could turn to Thomas Vermaelen to find defensive surety.
The Barcelona defender has played very little football for the Spanish champions due to his own veritable list of injuries and the partnership Gerard Pique and Javier Mascherano have formed has proved difficult to break up.
According to AS, Liverpool have made an offer and so have both Arsenal and AS Roma.
The arrival of Samuel Uttiti has further threatened Vermaelen’s chances of playing for Barcelona this season and a summer move to Liverpool would mean a return to the Premier League where he was so successful with Arsenal. The former Gunner was a key player for Arsene Wenger before becoming one of the players to leave North London in search of silverware.
Perhaps a return to England would be best for Vermaelen’s career with the last few years somewhat stagnating due to his lack of game time and injuries. That’s not to say he wouldn’t get injured in England but it could offer the chance to start anew.
Liverpool can offer him that which Barcelona, in all their glory, cannot; game time. The Belgian international may well be keen on a move to a club where the competition for starting places is not so fierce.
