Transfer Roundup: Ragnar Klavan confirmed as Liverpool player; Wijnaldum and Lucas Latest

Today Liverpool wrap up the signing of Ragnar Klavan and uncertainty reigns over Lucas Leiva’s future.

Liverpool have completed the signing of Ragnar Klavan from FC Augsburg. The 30-year old centre back who has spent four seasons in the Bundesliga has signed on the dot.

The defender signs at a time when Liverpool are going through a defensive injury crisis with Joe Gomez and Mamadou Sakho both injured with Joel Matip also picking up a knock. Tiago Illori is also unavailable due to his selection for Portugal’s Olympic squad.

Speaking to Liverpool’s official website Klavan said:

“It’s hard to put it into words, because it’s been a dream of mine for 22 years to come to the Premier League and be a part of this amazing club, Liverpool.

“The Premier League is the most attractive league in the world and you always have amazing players here. This is the home of football.”

Lucas Leiva continues to be linked with a move away from Liverpool, although the links seem to be appearing slightly closer to home. As it transpires, the Brazilian could depart Anfield in a player-plus-cash deal which would see Georginio Wijnaldum head to Merseyside.

Newcastle’s insistence on being paid in excess of £25 million is complicating matters. The Magpies want the cash up front plus Lucas as makeweight. Rafa Benitez, who managed the Brazilian during his time as Liverpool boss, is keen to link up with him once again.

It is also being reported by the Telegraph that Benitez is willing to offer Lucas the currently vacant captaincy role. The offer of being Newcastle is to try and convince him to trade the Premier League for the Championship which is  a big step-down for a player who has played in the Champions League before.

However, Fabricio Colocini’s return to Argentina after an eight-year spell on Tyneside leaves Newcastle captain-less and Benitez is thought to be looking to Lucas to help guide his team back to the Premiership. Lucas’ reluctance at playing in the Championship could be influenced by the relationship that he shares with Benitez.

Wijnaldum is almost certain to leave the Toon this summer with Benitez allowing Wijnaldum to return to Holland after the club’s pre-season trip to Ireland. It’s a case of negotiating a fee and whether or not Lucas will be used as makeweight.
