At a press conference, Christian Benteke announced he may consider leaving Liverpool if Jürgen Klopp doesn’t give him more game time after a frustrating season.
When Klopp arrived at Liverpool there were a lot of questions surrounding who would fit in and and who wouldn’t. Benteke stuck out like a sore thumb. The Belgian simply doesn’t suit Klopp’s extremely mobile high pressing game. As such he only played in 8 league games after Klopp’s appointment.
While speaking at a press conference ahead of Belgium’s Euro 2016 campaign he said:
“I still have a contract at Liverpool and I’d like to stay there, if I remain in the coach’s plans.
“If that’s not the case, it will become difficult to stay.
“When Klopp arrived I saw that I wasn’t in his plans. That was frustrating because I knew that during my first season at Aston Villa he wanted me.
“But we had several discussions together – I respect and I understand his decisions. I’ll think about if after the Euros.”
Liverpool, once again, are at crossroads with regards to the future of the club. Next season is highly important as it is Klopp’s first full season in charge and the first season with his own signings. Over the last 8 months he has enjoyed somewhat of a free ride with little true expectations and he will finally have something worth being judged upon.
Next season offers Liverpool a chance to return to Europe and even possibly challenge for the Premier League itself. Klopp needs to decide whether or not Benteke will contribute to next season in a meaningful manner. It is likely he won’t due to his inability to adapt to the pace of Liverpool’s style.
