Liverpool have confirmed the appointment of James Milner as the team’s new vice captain,

In Liverpool’s pre-match press conference with Sunday’s opening game against Stoke looming large Brendan Rodgers spoke highly of his new signing and now new vice captain:

“He works tirelessly,” explaining further that Milner is at training two hours early. This sort of commitment is why Rodgers looked to bring him to Anfield and why he has the faith to place the vice-captaincy in Milner who is yet to start a Premier League game for the club.

“James is someone I’d admired for a long time. He gives everything. He’s a big character,” said Rodgers.

“This move was a selfish move for me,” explained Milner. “Obviously playing at City and playing in different positions – the team will always come first, that’s the way I believe it should be, no matter where you are.

“But I think the move to come to Liverpool and take that mantle on myself was more of a selfish move and hopefully I can do well and contribute to success at Liverpool.

“I’d like to think you will see the best of me now I am in the central role.”

Liverpool fans have enjoyed watching  vice-captain, Milner and captain, Jordan Henderson quickly establish a midfield relationship during pre-season. The two will likely make up the club’s midfield for the most part of the season as both have superb injury records.
